Stay the Course or Make a New One

If you are one of our newsletter subscribers, you may have been surprised yesterday to find out that we added twins to our family just over a month ago. Yes, I’m physically exhausted, however mental exhaustion has also become a part of my life in the past five weeks because I now have so much time to think. What am I thinking? Simply put – Do I stay the course or make a new one?

Be a Tease

In a recent introductory consult with a prospective client I asked, “What type of teasers do you have?” The gentleman was confused. No, I was not talking inappropriately and suggesting he use racy methods to try to capture the attention of prospective clients. In the manner in which I was speaking EVERY business owner should be a tease.

Virtual Assistant: Cheap Labor or Valuable Team Member?

Sutton Creative Studios is growing our team, and along with growing our team we need to make sure there is a steady supply of work for the team to work on. I enjoy scrolling through proposal requests, so this is one of the tasks I perform (cough cough, despite the fact that I would tell all of you to hire a team member responsible for client development and marketing). Scrolling through the administrative sections on sites like oDesk and Elance it is obvious that there are two ways people view a virtual assistant: cheap labor or valuable team member.

I want to make one thing clear – Sutton Creative Studios does NOT contract out cheap labor. If that is what you are looking for… Go somewhere else.

No Excuses List

It’s been a few weeks since I shared my time tracking spreadsheet with our readers (if you haven’t requested your copy, click here), and in these weeks I implemented a few new changes for my time tracking. Namely, I’m tracking ALL business related activities whether internal tasks or for clients. As a result of this tracking I have become more productive with my time and have begun developing a “No Excuses List” for my use as well as for the use of our consultants.

Infusionsoft Aha Moment #1 – Clean Up Your Tags

This is embarrassing. As an Infusionsoft Certified Partner you would think that I would have had my tags on Infusionsoft under more control. Nope, not me. Following another “Aha!” moment this morning, it became abundantly clear that Infusionsoft was telling me “Clean Up Your Tags, Kim!”

Time Tracking for the Small Business Owner

Every other week – at least – somebody tells me that they “tried working at home once but it was too distracting.” I smile, nod my head, and usually reply something along the lines of, “Yes, it can be tough!”

What I don’t usually disclose is that VERY early on in our business I had the same issue. Very quickly I realized I needed to implement a time tracking system to hold myself accountable.

Klout Score: What You Need to Know

Last week I posted a discussion about Klout scores on several LinkedIn groups. From those who responded it quickly became clear that business owners in general have little-to-no knowledge about what a Klout score is or what their Klout score should be.

Shrinkage is Good

No, don’t go there. The shrinkage I’m talking about today refers to the size of our internal contact list.

And in terms of our contact list, shrinkage is good… sometimes…

Before 9am

Shhhh… I have a confession. Despite the official operating hours of Sutton Creative Studios, my work day begins well before 9am. How much before 9am? Well, that’s between me and my coffee maker, however I promise I do NOT mean 8:59.

And if you must know, my work day often ends well after 5pm – however don’t expect me to respond to your emails unless we previously agreed on it.

Why?

Because BEFORE 9am and AFTER 5pm are mine.

Who’s the Boss?

Who’s the Boss? No, I’m not asking for Tony Danza, star of the 1980’s sitcom. When I ask a small business owner “Who’s the boss?”, he or she should always answer, “Me!”

Unfortunately that’s not always what happens…
